Its success unleashed the imagination of Audemars Piguet’s artisans, showing how one great design could be adapted and evolved to suit various wearers. The Royal Oak came to prove it was as nimble as it was daring – with appeal across genders and generations.

New sizes, designs and movements followed – 27 new models within the Royal Oak’s first decade. The steel icon was reimagined in yellow, white gold and two-tone designs as early as 1977. Diamonds joined the mix in 1979. Some models were gemset, some had the original textured, Tapisserie dial, others didn’t.

The Royal Oak has constantly rewritten its own rules, allowing endless reinvention around those central design tenets of tonneau-shaped case and octagonal bezel with eight visible screws.

Reflecting its limitless appeal, women and men with differing personal lifestyles and aesthetics have chosen the Royal Oak to express their own style. From musicians including Jay-Z, Drake, Mark Ronson and Justin Bieber to sports stars such as Serena Williams and Lionel Messi, actors including Tom Cruise, Chris Hemsworth and Kevin Hart, as well as royalty from around the globe, famous wearers have each sported their preferred variation on the Royal Oak design.

Variations on an eternal theme

The Royal Oak 50th Anniversary Collection celebrates those years of innovation and imagination with an array of special releases in multiple sizes, movements and designs, each distinguished by a special 22-carat gold oscillating weight bearing the ’50 years’ logo matched to the colour of the case.

The enhanced ergonomics of the new design have created a subtly lighter and more slender watch in the 34, 37, 38 and 41mm models, with refinements to the signature case and tapered bracelet. And to delight admirers of precision and horological excellence, three brand new calibres debut in the RO50 collection.

In various combinations of pink gold, steel and a variety of dial colours, the 37mm is ultra-adaptable, complementing wardrobes of all shades and signatures, with appeal to men and women alike. This iteration also features a new embossed Audemars Piguet signature gracing the dial. Created with thin layers of 24-carat gold, using a cutting-edge chemical process similar to 3D printing, this component took three years to develop and perfect.

In addition to presenting the collection’s design evolution, the new 37mm models also premier a new movement, Calibre 5900, which is thinner and with a higher frequency than its predecessor, offering 60 hours of power reserve.

These are watches to be cherished in ways specific to the wearer. With its unique fusion of avant-garde and tradition, the Royal Oak appeals to free spirits, adventurers and rebels but also lovers of classic design and refinement. Whether given as a collectible, heirloom or stunning piece of jewellery, the gift of a RO50 watch speaks volumes about the connection between you.
