Baker Boy wins album of the year at ARIAs

Rapper Baker Boy has won album of the year at the 2022 ARIA Awards for his critically acclaimed Gela, giving his acceptance speech in an Indigenous language.

Baker Boy, otherwise known as Danzal James Baker, toured Australia during 2022 and released one of the most streamed songs, Wish You Well with Bernard Fanning.

He performed his rap Meditjin for the crowd at Hordern Pavilion in Sydney after receiving the award, before winning best hip hop/rap release just minutes later.

“This is crazy!” he said.

He dedicated the rap gong to family and young people back home.

“We can make that success … I did it, I’ve been there and I know you can,” he said.

Tones And I won Song Of The Year for her tune Cloudy Day.

Winning her fifth ARIA Award Tones And I, otherwise known as Toni Watson, said the 2022 awards had an awesome line-up.

“Its pretty cool to see the future of Australian music representing tonight,” she said.

Rock band Amyl and the Sniffers took home two ARIAs for Best Group and Best Rock Album.

The first in-person ARIAs night since 2019 is being hosted by eight-time ARIA Award-winner Natalie Imbruglia is hosting the event, while also celebrating the 25th anniversary of her chart-topping album Left Of The Middle.
