Birthday Special: The ultimate AR Rahman playlist

AR Rahman… it’s not a name, it’s a brand. One of the most celebrated musicians in the world, Allah Rakha Rahman started out as a jingle writer for documentaries and advertisements. In 1992, he made his debut with Roja and the world was given the gifts from the harmony gods. His major work was in Tamil and then he started out in the Hindi film industry. He was also the first recipient of the RD Burman award in 1995 that was bestowed by Filmfare on the most promising talent of the year.

Rahman, who has maintained a shy and introverted image for decades now, flourished when his music started to play. Apart from being the recipient of fifteen Filmfare Awards for his work in Hindi cinema and seventeen for his work down South, he has also won six National Awards, two Academy Awards, two Grammys, one BAFTA and one Golden Glove Award. While his success and talent cannot be quantified, these accolades should be indicative of his stature in the global music industry.

With work that generations from now will study, AR Rahman is going to leave behind an unmatched legacy with his music, songs and his contribution to world cinema. As this maestro turns 55 today, we make the ultimate playlist for you of his finest songs ever. Take a look.
