Former UCF QB Dillon Gabriel flips from UCLA to Oklahoma – Daily News

Former Central Florida quarterback Dillon Gabriel has flipped his commitment from UCLA to Oklahoma.

His announcement came hours after Oklahoma true freshman quarterback Caleb Williams announced his decision to enter the transfer portal on Monday, though Williams has said his Sooners career is not necessarily over.

Williams said staying at Oklahoma would “definitely be an option” as he goes through the process, explaining in a social media post that the only way under NCAA rules that he could speak to other schools and “see who may offer the best preparation and development for my future career is by entering the portal.”

Gabriel’s new pledge to Oklahoma will reunite him with Jeff Lebby, who recruited him out of high school and served as his quarterback coach at UCF for two seasons.

Lebby became coach Lane Kiffin’s offensive coordinator at Mississippi in 2019 but moved on in early December to take the same role at Oklahoma, under new coach Brent Venables.

Gabriel passed for 8,037 yards, 70 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in three seasons at UCF. He fractured his left clavicle in the third game of this past season and didn’t play for the remainder of the season.

He publicly committed to the Bruins on Dec. 16, just days after he was spotted talking with UCLA coach Chip Kelly during a Bruins practice.

“They say life’s a gamble like rolling the dice… DIMETIME,” Gabriel tweeted on Monday.

Gabriel was rated as a Top 5 transfer quarterback by 247sports and added depth to UCLA’s quarterback room.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Parker McQuarrie and freshman quarterback Kajiya Hollawayne entered the transfer portal after UCLA’s season finale against Cal.

Four-year starting quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson has not publicly announced whether he will take advantage of his remaining season of college eligibility or declare for the 2022 NFL Draft.

If Thompson-Robinson doesn’t return, Ethan Garbers is expected to take over as the starting quarterback when the 2022 season begins Sept. 3 against Bowling Green at the Rose Bowl.

Duke receiver Jake Bobo was the first commit out of the transfer portal before Gabriel. Linebackers Darius Muasau and Laiatu Latu were the latest UCLA commits from the transfer portal.

Muasau and Gabriel were teammates at Mililani High in 2018. It remains unclear if Gabriel’s decision will impact Muasau’s commitment to the Bruins.

Williams is the second notable Oklahoma quarterback to enter the transfer portal since Coach Lincoln Riley was hired at USC. Spencer Rattler lost his job to Williams during the season and decided to transfer after the season was done. Rattler is currently committed to South Carolina.

Williams and Incarnate Word transfer Cameron Ward are listed as the highest-rated uncommitted quarterbacks in the transfer portal, according to 247sports.
