Birdie run powers Yuka into contention | Sports

Yuka Saso birdied four of the last seven holes to complete a four-under par 67 on Saturday, putting her in good position to win her third title in the Japan Ladies Professional Golf Association (JLPGA) Tour.

The 19-year-old Filipino-Japanese goes into the final round of the 39th Daio Paper Ellair Ladies Open trailing Ayake Furue by just two shots.

Saso, who shared the lead with Yuna Nishimura at the halfway mark, had a lone birdie in the front nine before dropping a shot in the par-5 11.

She fought back with four consecutive birdies from 12 before closing with three straight pars to finish 54 holes on 202.

Furue made her move with seven birdies in a bogey-free round to climb on top on 200.

Erika Kikuchi shot a 65 to take solo third on 205. She had seven birdies against a solitary bogey.

Ayaka Watanabe, Min-Young Lee, Kana Nagai, and Nishimura were six shots off the pace on 206.

Watanabe, Lee and Nagai each had a 67 while Nishimura matched par.

Rounding out the Top 10 were Momoko Ueda 66-207, Minami Katsu 71-207, Maiko Wakabayashi 67-208 and Ji-Hee Lee 69-208.

Meanwhile, Juvic Pagunsan played the third round in regulation to stay in joint 57th place in the 47th Dunlop Phoenix tournament at the Phoenix Seagia Resort in Miyazaki.

The 42-year-old Filipino parred the first four holes before dropping a shot on 5. He made back-to-back birdies from 6, but bogeyed 10 and 12.

Pagunsan went back to even following a birdie on 4 and parred the last five holes to finish 54 holes on three-over 216, 15 shots behind co-leaders Tomoharu Otsuki and Tomohiro Ishizaka.

Otsuki collected seven birdies against two bogeys for 66 while Ishizaka turned in 68 behind seven birdies against a bogey and double bogey.

In solo third place on 202 was Takumi Kanaya who shot a 68.
