Daniil Medvedev hailed his win over Dominic Thiem as one of the ‘best victories’ of his career as he clinched the biggest title of his career at the ATP Finals in a fan-less O2 Arena.

Medvedev, the long-limbed Russian, fought back from a set down to beat the Austrian world No. 3 4-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 in two hours and 42 minutes in the final match at this event at the O2.

The 24-year-old has won back-to-back titles this month, winning 10 straight matches and beating seven top-10 players to pick up titles in Paris-Bercy and in London, and he became the final ATP Finals champion at the O2 before its move to Turin.

He is the sixth different champion in the final six years at this event and became the first man to beat the top-three players in ATP Finals history.

‘What a match,’ said Medvedev. ‘One of my best victories. Two hours 42, three sets against amazing player Dominic.

‘Congrats for what you achieved in your career. Your name is already in the history of tennis books so it’s amazing. You won a Grand Slam this year.

‘I hope we’re going to have many more matches to come on big occasions like this. You’re doing an amazing job.’

US Open champion Thiem, who was also beaten in last year’s final here, couldn’t hide his disappointment but praised Medvedev’s brilliant form in the final month of the season.

Thiem said: ‘Of course, I’m disappointed but at the same time I’m proud of the performances of the whole week, honestly.
