Man Utd news: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sends message to Mason Greenwood after he missed West Brom win

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes the return of Mason Greenwood could help reignite his side’s attack.

The teenager was a surprise absentee from Saturday’s 1-0 win against West Bromwich Albion and his absence continued a mystifying, difficult start to the season for the striker.

Greenwood missed a 3-1 win against Everton before the international break but had been expected to be involved against the Baggies as he was one of the few United players not to play for their country over the break.

The striker has scored twice this term but question marks have been raised about his professionalism after reports circled about Greenwood being late for training.

Though Solskjaer denied those claims, Greenwood has failed to hold down a regular spot in the side meaning United fans are yet to see a front three of Anthony Martial, Greenwood and Marcus Rashford thrive this season.

United haven’t scored a goal from open play at Old Trafford in the Premier League since an opening day defeat to Crystal Palace but Solskjaer hopes Greenwood can revive the side’s attack.

‘We’re looking forward to having Mason back fit again and well, so hopefully we can hit some form like we did toward the end of last season,’ said Solskjaer.

‘We need to improve. We need to get more flow and rhythm to our game, be more clinical and take our chances.

‘We’ve got plenty of quality and sometimes the most difficult thing is to keep it simple and sometimes we want to over-complicate things.

‘Yeah, we want players to seize opportunity but we need more flow, rhythm, make the opposition move.’

United take on Istanbul Basaksehir on Tuesday as the Norwegian’s side look to keep a grip on top spot in the group.

The Red Devils lost list time out in Turkey, undoing their hard work in beating PSG and RB Leipzig.

Greenwood could feature, while Paul Pogba is expected to return after an ankle knock kept him out of the win against the Baggies.
