Remy Gardner, the son of Australia’s 1987 500cc world champion Wayne Gardner, has claimed his victory in Moto2.
The 22-year-old topped the podium at the season-ending Portuguese GP at Algarve, ahead of Luca Marini and Sam Lowes.
“No words. Thanks to everyone who has stood by me and for all the support. To win my first GP is amazing,” Gardner wrote on Twitter.
Gardner finished sixth in the championship standings, topped by Italian Enea Bastianini after he finished fifth in the final race.
Gardner was locked in a thrilling battle for first with Marini in the latter stages of the race but had his maiden victory secured by the final lap.
The Australian had waited 75 races for the breakthrough in Moto2. He races for the ONEXOX TKKR SAG Team and will next season join the Ajo KTM team.
