A manhunt is under way for a person who police believe stabbed another man to death in the NSW Hunter Region.
About 3.45pm on January 6, emergency services were called to a home on Michael St, Jesmond, following reports a man had been stabbed.
The Newcastle City Police District officers who attended found a 34-year-old man with a stab wound to his chest.
Police were told the 34-year-old visited the home and was injured during an altercation with the male occupant, who then fled the scene.
The injured man was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.
Despite the best efforts of medical staff, the man died in hospital.
Newcastle City detectives have established Strike Force Mantillus to investigate the circumstances of the fatal stabbing.
A large-scale search is under way to locate the male occupant of the home.
Investigators are asking for anyone with information to contact Newcastle City police station or Crime Stoppers.
